Why measure?

True success and leadership requires measurement. Only through measurement can you determine what works and what isn't working. Executives who are measurement cite ten major reasons why they choose to dive into the LBG Corporate Social Investment measurement process.
  1. "I want to know where I am." Common standards help us capture our bearings and place in the world and our industries.
  2. "I want to make sure I am doing the right thing." Though social investment can be harder to measure than financial returns, we an still use measurement to help us determine what we do best and what we could do better.
  3. "I want to do the right thing." More than just doing the right thing, executives want to do it the right way. Measurement can help ensure the resources we're putting in is being done as well as it can be.
  4. "I don't want any nasty surprises." Measurement helps us anticipate problems and respond effectively so we don't destory what we've worked for.
  5. "I want to check it worked out as planned." Measurement does not have to be scientific. The pursuit of finding out what happened is what matters. It doesn't have to be complicated.
  6. "I don't want to waste my time." It's not possible to measure everything for all projects but we can at least measure what we can. We can make informed predictions based on prior results.
  7. "I want to make a lasting contribution." The only way to ensure the best work survives and lives on, is through careful strategic and measurement. We must be accountable to the success of social investments.
  8. "I want to get better at what I do." If programs you invest in know that you're measuring, they're going to work harder and better. Measurement will improve performance of the initiatives you're investing in.
  9. "I want to know where I'm going." The measurement process is constructive and promotes change.
  10. "I don't want to be left behind." If you stick with the program, and lead the way, soon, excellence in tracking strategies will become the norm.
